Post-Harvest Research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

There are a number of disciplines involved in post-harvest research:

  1. Agricultural Engineering: the focus is to use engineering tools to invent and implement novel engineering solutions to existing problems in the post-harvest environment.
Contact Person: Prof. Tilahun Seyoum     seyoum@ukzn.ac.za
  1. engineering of harvest post-harvest conditions for seed, cassava, fruit, vegetables
  2. development of novel processing, transport, cooling and drying technologies for post-harvest storage
  3. supply chain factors affecting postharvest quality of fruit and vegetables
  1. Horticultural Science: the focus is on manipulating post-harvest physiology to optimize the shelf life of fruit and vegetables.
Contact Person: Prof. Isa Bertling    bertlingi@ukzn.ac.za
  1. post-harvest physiology of avocado, citrus, litchi, mango
  2. post-harvest physiology of vegetables
  1. Plant Breeding: the focus is to use the tools of plant breeding to develop crops that are resistant to post-harvest diseases and insects, physically or physiologically.
Contact Person: Prof. Hussein Shimelis shimelish@ukzn.ac.za
  1. breeding for the control of post-harvest insects and diseases in staple foods of Africa: grains, pulses and tubers
  2. breeding for reduced levels of mycotoxin forming fungi in crops post-harvest
  3. breeding for control of PPD (post-harvest physiological deterioration) of cassava
  1. Plant Pathology: the focus is on the applied biological control of pests and diseases. The research is done with the support of an industry partner so the goal is practical, to develop biocontrol agents that can be manufactured and sold to farmers. We have been involved in the development of a number of successful products that have been commercialised on a global scale.
Contact Person: Prof. Mark Laing laing@ukzn.ac.za
  1. biological control of post-harvest diseases of fruit, vegetables and grains
  2. biological control of mycotoxin forming fungi, both pre- and post-harvest
  3. use of rapid hot water treatments to treat fruit and other crops
  4. biological control of pests of grains in storage
