Department of Post-harvest Management

About the Department

Post-harvest management (PHM) department was established in November 2008 to host B.Sc. in PHM program and other initiatives of the Post-harvest Management to Improve Livelihoods (PHMIL) project. Through time, the BSc program in PHM has been nationally harmonized as BSc in Food Science and Post-harvest Technology (FSTP). Moreover, the department has already launched an MSc program in Post-harvest Management as of September 2010 which again was modified into MSc in Post-harvest Science and technology and MSc in Food Science and Nutrition. In addition, the department has already PhD level training in Post-harvest Technology (PT) and Food Science and Technology. Therefore, these are the existing programs under the department of PHM.

Facilities & Services
The department owns laboratories that are better equipped with most appropriate equipment (through the PHMIL project) (including Gas Chromatography, Penetrometer, UV- visible spectrophotometer, temperature controlled centrifuges, Texture analyzer, water activity meter, automatic nitrogen analyzer, soxohlet Apparatus, chambers for accelerated shelf life study, grain processing laboratories, technology incubation and demonstration center,  for  etc.) that will be used for teaching and research. The department has prototype machines for processing, sorting, roasting, grinding, and oil extraction.

Apart from teaching and research activities the department offers tailor based short term training and consultancy services in areas of:
  • food safety and standards
  • food processing and preservation
  • Coffee, tea and spices processing and packaging
  • Post-harvest technology
  • Fresh products handling logistics
  • Laboratory services
The department has good collaboration with national and international organizations
