The UFRGS Postharvest Laboratory of Horticultural Sciences Department of Agronomy School has a very strong graduate program and is one of the highest ranked agronomy schools in Brazil. The Postharvest Laboratory is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Renar João Bender and has the major focus is on fruit and vegetable production/good agricultural practices. In the post harvest field, research activities (besides teaching assignments and extension activities) are dedicated to determine metabolic effects of mechanical injuries on fresh produce and to evaluate alternative treatments (physical, chemical or biological) to control or to reduce significantly postharvest decay incidence, losses in volume and/or quality.
